Estonia has close to 500 known historical sacred springs. Although water itself was holy for the ancient Estonians, some of the springs were believed to have special powers of healing, prognostication or influencing the weather, fortune-telling or answering prayers. Many sacred springs continue to be used for drawing mineral water.
