Description
The Church Site is a plain, nowadays overgrown by grass site in SW direction of the garden edge of the Jaunrēzas homestead, at the verge of the Kranupīte river valley. It has no relief featuring and other outer visual features, thus the area of the site cannot be defined more accurately for the present.
Narrative
- “The Church Hillock — about 200 m off the Jaunrēzas farmer’s homestead in south direction. When digging a pit, there were bricks and stones found. The pond by the church walls — a small ravine at the Jaunrēzas farmer’s homestead by the Church Hillock. They say there was a pond constructed where old money was minted.” (Funds’ Place Names of the Latvian Academy of Science. 1958–1970. Rec. by A. Plaudis 1990)
- On September 1, 2011, the church site was indicated by the Jaunrēzas homestead’s proprietor Jānis Kalnabunde (born 1940). They say there used to be a church; there were stones and bricks found, which were such big ones, those of the ancient times. The church site was levelled off during drainage works of the Soviet period. Opposite the church site in the Kranupīte river, there was a mill. They pulled millstones out of the river and placed on the river bank opposite the now uninhabited the Vecrēžas homestead (where the former proprietor was Uldriķis). The millstones has been recently sold and taken away. In the Kranupīte river opposite the church site, they found a couple of meters long wooden manger, which was later used in household.
